![]() That product failed because it was a little ahead of its time. I found a reference to what I was remembering. To meet that extra power need, the external HDD had a small rechargeable battery. Apparently, 5400 rpm 3.5" HDDs can run fine on the amount of power supplied by a USB port, except that a much higher current is needed when the motor spins up. ![]() At some point, one of the OEMs (Seagate?) did release such an external HDD. On a related note, why don't manufacturers make external HDDs that use 3.5" HDDs but don't require a separate power adapter? Earlier, USB ports could supply less power, but now with USB-C, the ports can supply more. Now that both iPhone and Pixel can record 4k 60 fps, and those videos use up about 0.5 GB for one minute, 5 TB doesn't seem enormous any more. When I bought a similar Seagate 5 TB external portable HDD in 2019 (which was the max available in a portable external HDD at that time as well), it seemed like a lot of storage. I wonder when/if we will see 6 TB or more in a portable external HDD.
